Hydroseeding

Why Hydroseed?

Hydroseeding is a great alternative to sod or other seeding methods. It can be used to plant grass, (both lawn and native grasses), as well as other plants like alfalfa and clover. It allows you to match seed variety with your existing grass to fix disturbed areas as seamlessly as possible. It can be applied successfully on hills where traditional seeding would be washed away, and it allows you to quickly seed a lawn, often for a fraction of the cost of sod. It is also easier to keep moist, which is a huge benefit in our Colorado climate!

  • Hydroseeding is a method of planting seed by mixing it with water, natural tackifying agents (which keep the mixture from being blown or washed away) and hydro mulch (which retains moisture, helping the seed and ground stay moist to improve germination). This mixture is applied in a layer on the ground using a special sprayer to create an even layer. Seeding this way allows for an even distribution of seed and significantly increases the chances of germination compared to hand seeding, due to better moisture retention and fewer seeds lost to wind, both during and after seeding. When hydroseeding you also have the option of adding soil additives to improve the PH balance and nutrition of the soil.

  • Most of the time, turf farms focus on growing varieties of grass that grow quickly and have a dense root system. This enables them to grow more turf and helps the turf to hold up better during the transport and installation. However, these characteristics are not always what you want for your yard. Fast growth means more frequent mowing. It also means that more water is needed to maintain a nice green lawn. In other states this is not a problem, but here in Colorado it is often impractical and costly to maintain these types of grass, when half of your water usage is going to keeping your lawn green!

Hydroseeding allows you to plant the variety of grass that is best suited to both your environment and desired outcome, and often at a fraction of the cost compared to sod!

  • There are a number of factors that go into the cost of hydroseeding, including the type of seed, soil amendment additives, size of the project, layout, slope, and condition of site, but typically we charge between $0.20 and $1.00 per square foot with a $300 minimum. We are also happy to hydroseed outside our service area, but there will be an additional charge for the extra distance. Most of the time hydroseeding costs substantially less than sod, and when compared to sod has many other benefits (see the other sections for more on this topic)!

Is your ground ready for Hydroseeding?

Although you can hydroseed on any ground, the success of it depends on how well the ground was prepared. If you have extremely hard ground, especially if it has a crust, it will be very hard for the grass to take root as it germinates. If you have extremely sandy soil or straight clay, it might be hard for the new grass to find the proper nutrients. In addition, if you want to hydroseed your lawn but the ground is uneven, then site preparation will be required to achieve the best outcome.

We can help you here. Before hydroseeding, we can break up the hard soil, amend it as needed, and grade it out to make it smooth and ready. A little more cost up front is worth it to ensure the best possible outcome for the long term. On small jobs, it is even possible for us to prepare the ground and hydroseed right away, all in one day!
